Lockheed Lightning P38L- F5B
Photo reconnaissance version
Army Air Corps 1944

Under contract AC-24636, Lockheed converted about
200 P-38J airframes to F-5B-1 Photo Lightnings
(Lockheed model 422-81-21) and delivered them to
the Army Air Corps between September 1943 and
January 1944. The P-38J version contained major
enhancements over earlier models that provided
increased power, internal fuel capacity, maneuverability,
and safety. The F-5B-1 was the last of the Photo Lightnings
to be factory built by Lockheed. All later F-5 variants were
converted from various P-38 airframes at modification centers
or field depots.
F-5B-1s were powered by two Allison V-1710-F17 engines:
model V-1710-F17R (military model V-1710-89) supplied right
(starboard) prop rotation while model V-1710-F17L
(military model V-1710-91) rotated left (port).
